Crustacean Nations is a real-time strategy game about total crab warfare. Build a sprawling sand castle and amass huge armies to dominate the beach and become the one true crustacean nation!

Over the course of the project, our team of eight took this project from conceptualization to completion. It can be played on Steam and Itch.io .

My Role - Designer and QA Lead

I focused on team communication, documentation, and acted as a liaison between disciplines.

My tasks also included attending testing sessions for prototypes and synthesizing feedback with our team's producer. I would prepare questionnaires for playtesters and then present quantitative and qualitative feedback weekly based on what aspects of our prototype we needed to be tested in that sprint.

My most important responsibilities and contributions included:

  • Developing design documents to organize systems, communicate expectations, and act as a tool for other designers and programmers to use.

  • Creating asset sheets to track what needed to be created and the status of those assets.

  • Organizing testing sessions with QA testers to better understand gameplay systems and player experience. After each session, I would analyze the feedback and present it to the team.

One of the main challenges I was responsible for tackling was creating better player feedback via our UI.

Because we were developing a real-time strategy game, managing the information presented to the player was key to the overall experience.

There was no player feedback to indicate whether or not the player didn't have the needed resources or if they were trying to build in an unreachable spot.

To solve this, I developed a UI system to communicate why the player was unable to place a building. I found that this mitigated player frustration in QA sessions afterward and helped to create a more positive player experience.
